Frequently Asked Questions
This section is designed to answer some of the questions that I am most frequently asked as a massage therapist.
1) Does a massage have to hurt to be effective?
A massage does not have to hurt to be theraputic. There may be a bit of soreness if you receive focused deep tissue massage on a specific area, but otherwise, a massage should feel enjoyable and relaxing.
2) How often should I get a massage?
This decision is entirely up to the client; however, if possible, a regularly scheduled massage can greatly help reduce stress and increase your sense of well-being. It has been consistently shown that reducing stress improves one's overall health.
If we are working to remedy a specific issue, it may be necessary to have more frequent sessions for a while.
3) Do you practice energy therapies such as reiki, craniosacral therapy, shiatsu, etc.?
I may use aspects of these modalities for relaxation purposes, but I do not use them with the expectation that they will alleviate illness. These modalities have never been shown to provide more than a placebo effect in curing illness.
4) Can you tell me what is wrong with my elbow, knee, neck, etc.?
Massage therapists are not trained in diagnosing medical problems. I may, however, be able to work with your doctor to address a problem you are facing. Depending on the situation, I may also ask you to check with your doctor before getting a massage.
5) How much of my clothing should I remove during my massage?
You can undress to whatever level you feel comfortable. It is common for people to undress completely for a full body massage. During your session, I will only uncover (or undrape) the area of the body on which I'm working. You will be given privacy to undress and get on the table under the top sheet.
Removing your underwear does allow for better access to the glutes--a powerful set of muscles around the hip and often neglected in many massages. If you feel more comfortable keeping your underwear on, however, by all means, feel free to do so.
6) Do I have to listen to new age/ambient music while getting a massage?
You can listen to whatever music you like, or no music at all. Whatever would help you best to relax is most important.
